Help Celebrate Black History Month
Parents and students are invited to support James Bowie High School's Black History Month activities including guest speakers visiting Bowie on February 23 and the annual Faculty Soul Food Luncheon to be held Wednesday, February 28.
Teachers Ms. Pfeiffer and Ms. Brisco are sponsoring several Black History Month events, and they are looking for donations. Donations can be brought to the front office and labeled as "Faculty Soul Food Luncheon Pfeiffer/Brisco."
We encourage our families to show support for faculty activities with any of the following donations:
$25 and $50 VISA/major credit cards - gift cards for our out-of-town performing guests at the Black History Month assembly
Bush's Chicken gift cards (any amount) for the Faculty Soul Food Luncheon on Wed., 2/28
Water bottles, can sodas, sweet and unsweetened tea for the Faculty Soul Food Luncheon.
Ms. Brisco, also know as Mama B, started the Black History Month Celebration 28 years ago, and it is one of many Bowie traditions that students and faculty have come to love. "I was blessed to be an integral part of the visions.The Black History Celebration, which was revived last year, is one of them," she says.
"On campus, our daily activities include morning announcements by teachers and students showcasing moments and influential figures in African American history, music in A-hall to honor African American musicians, a classroom door decoration contest for teachers, and banners and visuals around the school with inspirational quotes from African Americans in history and the present," says Ms. Pfeiffer.
The Black History Program for students is February 23. Four dignitaries/leaders from the community and state will visit campus including a staff member from State Senator Senfronia Calpernia Thompson's office, a professional modern/jazz dancer, a CEO motivational speaker/ entrepreneur and an award-winning gospel, hip hop, and R&B singer. "These individuals believe in students and are willing to give up their professional obligations to come to Bowie to help us celebrate Black History Month," says Ms. Brisco.
